THE RIVER LETHE
LIVE MUSIC WITH C.J. BOYD
Bassist turned vagabond C.J. Boyd uses bass loops and voices in order to try and stop time. On perpetual tour since March 2008, movement and stasis are both at the center of his music ,weaving together improvisation with a sparse, minimalist aesthetic. Boyd creates waves of sound and worlds of provocative unlived memories through a singular approach to the upright bass and electric bass guitar, making everything both near and far. His oceanic sound is complimented by ambient soundscapes and unsyncopated rhythms. Boyd runs the music label Obsolete Media Objects and takes walks everyday.
Brand Library & Art Center is proud to present The River Lethe, a solo exhibition by Los Angeles artist Joshua Hagler. Drawing inspiration from the Greek mythological river of forgetting, Hagler responds to aspects of American history and culture that haunt us today. Investigative in nature, this body of work examines our cultural amnesia and psychological repression, uncovering deeper truths about who we are through the felt presence of memory.
In the Atrium Gallery, Elizabeth Dorbad presents her global series Itinerant Architectures, which has had iterations in Memphis, Baltimore, San Francisco, Oakland, Badger, Berlin, Kassel, New York and Los Angeles. The series engages the notion of architectural time while addressing identity, transience, decay and the quality of witness in buildings.
