“The city is a blind courier. It brings nothing. It takes nothing.” – Norman Klein
Blind Courier takes the idea of the city as a passive entity and turns it on its head. Nine Los Angeles area artists offer a compelling mix of work that reveals their relationship to a place. By documenting, redefining and re-envisioning dwellings, neighborhoods and landmarks, the artists have shaped their own surroundings. Curators Hilary Baker and Lauren Kasmer originally conceived of this exhibition as homage to Los Angeles. Expanding on this idea, they selected artists whose work casts a wider net beyond the boundaries of the city. Blind Courier is the map that invites the viewer to meander through their individual environments.
In conjunction with the exhibition Blind Courier, Lauren Kasmer and Joyce Dallal are bringing their Homesĭtē Recipe Exchange to the Brand Library & Art Center. Homesĭtē is an expansive travelling public participatory art installation begun in 1992. It encourages residents of Los Angeles to contribute recipes, stories, visual items and small tableaus, thus forming a collective perspective about the city. Visitors are invited to express their connection to a locale – be it a neighborhood, city or country – through their recipes and stories about food. During the opening reception on June 29, 2019 the Homesĭtē Recipe Exchange will be conducting live red carpet 'interviews.’
The reception is FREE and open to the public. Artists will be in attendance.
