Zoning the city is the process of dividing the city into areas that have different development regulations. These regulations are found in the City's Zoning Ordinance. The purpose of the zoning ordinance is to designate, regulate and restrict the location and use of buildings, structures and land to protect residential, commercial, and industrial and recreation/open space areas alike from harmful encroachment by incompatible uses. The City of Glendale has:
- 7 Residential Districts (ROS, RIR, RI, R-3050, R-2250, R-1650, and R-1250 zones)
- 7 Commercial Districts (C1, C2, C3, CR, CPD, CH, and CA zones)
- 2 Industrial Districts (IND and T zones)
- 4 Mixed Use Districts (IMU, IMU-R, SFMU, and DSP zones)
- 4 Special Purpose Districts (CE, CEM, MS and SR zones).
