The Youth & Family Services Section is designed to provide free information and referral services to at-risk youth and their families. The section supports the family unit by providing guidance in decision-making and by linking individuals with supportive services. Youth must be 13-17 years old or young adults within the ages of 18-21. No income or residency requirements needed. Self-referrals, and referrals from other agencies are accepted.

Programs & Services Provided

One Glendale After School Youth Sports Program

One Glendale was developed, in partnership with the Glendale Unified School District (GUSD) and Glendale Parks & Open Space Foundation, to prevent child hood obesity, build self-esteem, teach leadership skills, and address classroom discipline, by providing after school recreation programming through organized sports. Currently, eight south Glendale elementary schools participate in the program. The program has four seasons concentrating on a specific sport eight weeks at a time, including flag football, volleyball, basketball, and soccer. Each school participates with up to thirty 4thand 5thgrade students who otherwise do not have access to organized sports.

STAR (Students Training As Role Models)

The STAR program is a collaboration between the Glendale Police Department and the City of Glendale’s Community Services & Parks Department. STAR is designed for at-risk children between the ages of 9 and 14. Most are from low to moderate income families in South Glendale. Students enter the program recommended by teachers, school administrators, and others. Typically, STAR has 12-20 children enrolled in the program at all times. The group meets weekly with program-dedicated uniformed officers and park staff. Students receive mentorship, support, and care through lesson plans, life skills, dialogue, activities, academic achievement, and community service. As a result, officers and staff develop a special bond with the students. The point-based program rewards good behavior predicated on the Six Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, citizenship, and caring.

Teen Night Out

Teen Night Out occurs every Friday night from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Pacific Community Center located at 501 S. Pacific Ave., Glendale, CA 91204. Teen Night Out provides a safe place for teens ages 13 – 18 to hang out and enjoy activities like video games, ping pong, computer lab, and karaoke. Light refreshments are served.

Mentoring in Middle Schools

Mentoring in Middle Schools is a collaboration between the Glendale Unified School District, City of Glendale’s Youth & Family Services Section, and Homenetmen Glendale Ararat to provide mentoring for twenty middle school students at both Toll and Wilson Middle Schools. Speakers from both the public and private sector provide students with insight on employment opportunities, responsibility, courtesy, and citizenship.

Annual High School Resource Fair

The Annual High School Resource Fair provides an opportunity for students to receive information on how to pursue different career paths within the City of Glendale. The Resource Fair gathers various City Departments for one day of information sharing on the high school campuses. Students learn about various job opportunities within each department directly from the Supervisors of those positions, when to apply, the requirements and necessary experience.

Community Based Teen Volunteering

Community based teen volunteering provides teens the opportunity to volunteer for the City of Glendale. In order to qualify, volunteers must:

Be at least 14 years of age;
Provide one form of identification: CA Driver’s License, CA ID card, U.S. Passport, Military ID or Green card; and
Commit to volunteering 50 hours a year.
