Turning Waste into Energy to Power Homes

Glendale Water & Power's Biogas Renewable Generation project will generate approximately 11 megawatts net of renewable energy for the City of Glendale on an approximately two-acre portion of the City’s Scholl Canyon Landfill. Landfills naturally generate biogas as waste decomposes. Biogas is composed of methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, oxygen, and small amounts of other compounds. Today, Glendale is required by law to capture and flare the biogas into the atmosphere with no environmental or economic benefits. Instead of allowing biogas to escape into the atmosphere, this innovative facility will allow us to turn the biogas into energy to power over 11,000 Glendale homes, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year!

Biogas is an essential renewable energy source, and is consistent and reliable unlike other types of renewable energy. This form of renewable energy can produce power at night and through any weather conditions. As most people are home in the evening turning on lights, running the AC, and charging their electric vehicles, this facility will be there to help supply power in those hours of need.

This project is important in protecting our environment for many years to come. Even if the City’s Scholl Canyon Landfill were to close tomorrow, we will still benefit from this project because we must continue to control the biogas that is produced at the landfill for another 30 or more years after closure.

On November 30, 2021, the Glendale City Council took the following actions relating to the Biogas Renewable Generation Project to be located at 3001 Scholl Canyon Road (vehicular access via 7721 North Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90041):

1. Certified the Final Environmental Impact Report and approved the Mitigation Monitoring and Reporting Program

2. Approved the Conditional Use Permit No. PCUP 2012782, and the Special Recreation Review No. PSRZDR 2012781
