Current Construction Status

  • Pavement – Surface profile grinding scheduled for October 20, 2014; cold in-place recycling scheduled for October 27, 2014; final surface paving scheduled to begin on November 5, 2014
  • Storm Drain Construction – Approximately 50% complete, working on the laterals at Cañada/Ramona/Glorietta; expected to begin sewer conflict on Glorietta on October 27, 2014.
  • Storm Drain Replacement – replacement pipes across Cañada at Del Valle and Don Carlos along with the installation of pipe lining extending to the Verdugo Wash is complete.
  • Water Main Cleaning & Lining – approximately 90% complete, Phase 4 near Cañada and Towne is nearing completion.
  • Water Main Replacement – Work has been completed.
  • Concrete Work – On Cañada about 85% complete with the remainder coordinating with the completion of the traffic signal modifications; On Capistrano, 100% complete.
  • Traffic Signals – Approximately 50% complete
  • Schedule – the overall project is currently scheduled to be completed in mid-January 2015.  The major work will be done by mid-November.  Construction activities cleaned up for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.  Final completion pending weather and construction delays.

Scope of Work

  • Rehabilitation of two existing storm drain systems on Don Carlos Avenue and Del Valle Avenue which drain to the Verdugo Wash.
  • Construction of a new storm drain system along Ramona Avenue and Glorietta Avenue to the Verdugo Wash.
  • Cleaning and lining of approximately 11,183 linear feet of existing 6-inch to 30-inch cast iron water main. The cleaning and lining work will require that water customers be placed on a temporary water by-pass system.
  • Replacement of approximately 4,893 LF of 4-inch cast iron water main with new 8-inch ductile iron water main, as well as the replacement of valves and fire hydrant assemblies.
  • Rehabilitation of the pavement along all of Cañada Boulevard, using cold in-place recycling to minimize public impacts, including a rubberized asphalt concrete wearing surface.
  • Modification of five traffic signals on Cañada Boulevard.
  • Modification of the traffic signal at Central Avenue and Los Feliz Boulevard.
  • Resurfacing or slurry sealing of all side streets between Cañada Boulevard and the Verdugo Wash that have not been resurfaced recently.
  • Planting of approximately 44 new street trees, including the removal of 9 dead or dying existing street trees.
  • Installation of traffic striping and pavement markings, including the addition of Shared Roadway (“Sharrows”) Bicycle Markings.
  • Rehabilitation of the pavement on Honolulu Avenue between Lowell Avenue and Boston Avenue.
  • Installation of a Metal Bean Guard Rail on Verdugo Boulevard.

Community Meeting

Date: Wednesday, August 14, 2013

Location: City of Glendale Municipal Services Building, Room 105

Subject: Attendees learned about the project's scope of work from Engineering Division, Glendale Water & Power Engineering Section and Maintenance Services Urban Forestry representatives. Residents were informed about the project, timeline, notification process, and the benefits of the improvements, including better water quality and increased water system reliability. Public Works Engineering staff addressed the storm drain installation and pavement rehabilitation portion of the project. Attendees were informed that the latter will increase the lifespan of the pavement. They also discussed American with Disabilities Act compliance as related to the project. The last part of the presentation related to trees; 92 are expected to be planted. During the Q & A portion of the meeting, residents inquired about project phasing, construction coordination, safety measures, traffic mitigation, as well as selection of tree specimens and location of potential removals and proposed plantings.
