Scope of Work

The City’s Tree Maintenance Services contractor, West Coast Arborists, Inc., will conduct routine grid maintenance pruning of all City-owned trees in Maintenance District 7.  The City or its contractors generally maintain all City trees on a continuous, rolling six-year cycle.  Prior to pruning, each tree is assessed by a Certified Arborist to direct the work. The goal of this pruning is to improve the structure of the trees and direct new growth, while enhancing their beauty and safety until the next routine grid maintenance pruning.

The tree crews follow arboriculture industry standards; removing significant portions of the live leaf area is avoided and topping or hat-racking is strictly prohibited, and trees will not be pruned to specifically remove fruit, cones, or reduce leaf litter. This six-year cycle ensures the trees are maintained in a safe condition without placing excessive stress on the tree's health. In general, the City avoids pruning public trees on a more frequent basis that the routine tree pruning cycle.  

All trees within the City's rights-of-way and planting easements within Maintenance District 7 will be assessed and pruned. Any trees within City rights-of-way or easements, which are maintained privately as specified by a covenant or other agreement with the City, will not be maintained as part of this project.

Project Schedule

Work began March 14, 2023 and is expected to be completed within 6 months, barring unforeseen circumstances.  In general, the contractor completes an entire block prior to proceeding to another area, but occasionally trees will be revisited at a later time due to access issues or different equipment required.

Traffic Impacts

If you live in District 7, you may notice large contractor vehicles and equipment in your neighborhood. Delineated work zones and temporary debris containers will be set up until the pruning is complete. During the project, traffic may need to be reduced temporarily to a single lane or closed for brief periods to facilitate the work. Please check the City’s webpage and social media portals for the latest information. The contractor will post 'No Parking' signage at least 72 hours prior to pruning to provide advanced notice to adjacent properties.

Each City-owned tree within Maintenance District 7 will be assessed and pruned, inclusive of Rossmoyne, Greenbriar, and portions of Brockmont.  Areas within the City Center and Citrus Grove neighborhoods near the 134 freeway will also be pruned.
