The types of inspections performed by the FPB inspectors range from existing occupancies to new construction to brush clearance. A brief description of each type inspection can be found below:

• State Fire Marshal Priority Building Inspections – Inspections mandated by the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) to be conducted annually or biannually. The GFD reports annually on the status of these inspections to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
  • High Rise (annually)
  • Jails (biannually)
• State Fire Marshal regulated inspections - Inspections also mandated by the OSFM to be conducted annually, but fall outside of the Priority Building Inspection Program. The GFD reports annually on the status of these inspections to the Glendale City Council.
  • Residential Occupancies (Hotels, Motels, and Apartments with 3 or more units)
  • Residential Care Facilities
  • Schools
• State Fire Marshal regulated occupancies – Inspections of higher risk occupancies that the GFD inspects through our local fire/life safety inspection program.
  • Assemblies (Churches, banquet halls, movie theaters, restaurants)
  • Adult and Child Day Care Centers
  • Institutions (nursing homes, dialysis centers, ambulatory surgical centers)
  • Hospitals
• Municipal Code Regulated Occupancies
  • Mid-rise and Low-rise Buildings (non-residential)
• Vegetation Management Program (VMP) - Inspections conducted annually of the properties located within the High and Very High Hazard Zones of the City for compliance with hazardous vegetation clearance requirements.
• Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA) – Hazardous material inspections mandated by the Unified Inspection Program overseen by the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA). This program is made up of 5 different program elements each regulated by a separate State Agency but implemented and inspected by the GFD:
  • Hazardous Material Business Plans
  • Hazardous Waste
  • Underground Storage Tanks
  • Aboveground Petroleum Storage Tanks and Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure
  • California Accidental Release Program
• Industrial Waste – Inspections mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of industrial waste water discharged by businesses into the sanitary sewer system. (Link to IW page)
• Construction – Inspections of new buildings, alterations or additions to existing buildings, installation and alteration of fire protection systems and other fire and life safety systems. These inspections are conducted by the FPB inspectors out of the Fire Engineering office.
• Special Events/Filming – These are inspections for special events and filming that require a City Special Event Permit. 
  • Special events may require a separate fire permit for items such as:
    • Tents/canopies
    • Fireworks, pyrotechnics and special effects
    • Temporary assemblies
    • Open Flame
• Hazard Complaint – A Fire inspector will be assigned to investigate fire or life safety issues brought to our attention from a concerned citizen. Any immediate hazard to life or health should be reported to 911.
  • Hazardous materials – Any spilled or abandoned hazardous materials will be investigated through the CUPA program. Call 911 if discovered.
• Fire Clearance – Inspections mandated by a licensing authority, such as the Department of Social Services or the Department of Public Health. In some cases, insurance companies will request an inspection for insurance purposes.
